On Saturday March 8, 2014, OSU Extension Agricultural & Resource Law Attorney, Peggy Hall, and Extension Educator, Emily Adams, will present at the Southwest Ohio Small Farm Conference in Wilmington, Ohio. They will present two sessions: "Setting up Your Food Business: Risk Reduction Strategies" and "Selling Your Meat, Eggs and Produce: Keeping it Safe and Legal."

OSU Extension's Larry Gearhardt will present at the 2014 Southwest Ohio Small Farm Conference on Saturday March 8, 2014. His session, "Tax Time Techniques for the Beginning Farmer," will start out by discussing the definition of "farmer" in the tax code and the advantages of being a farmer as opposed to a hobby. In addition, tax benefits and advantages of being classified as a farmer will be covered. Other items discussed will include: income and deductions availbale for farmers, depreciation of equipment, self-employment tax and where to report the information on their tax forms.

The Ohio Fresh Foods Corridor will be offering a workshop on February 25, 2014 that will focus on considerations and opportunities in specialty crop production. The workshop will feature two legal sessions: "Setting up Your Food Business: Risk Reduction and Strategies" and "Selling Your Meat, Eggs and Produce: Keeping it Safe and Legal." OSU Extension Attorney, Peggy Hall, and OSU Extension Educator, Emily Adams, will lead those sessions.

Our food law library has several new additions on cottage food regulations, labeling and sampling home-based food products, and selling baked goods at a farmer's market.

Ohio State University Extension is offering Farmland Leasing Workshops throughout Ohio this January through March 2014. The program for landowners and farmers will focus on factors affecting leasing options and rental rates, analyzing rent survey data, flexible cash lease arrangements and legal issues in farmland leasing. Workshop presenters include Peggy Hall, Assistant Professor, OSU Extension Director, Agricultural & Resource Law Program and Barry Ward, Assistant Professor, OSU Extension Leader, Production Business Management.
